HISTORY OF NEW TESTAMENT MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH

The New Testament Missionary Baptist Church was organized on March 3, 1963, in Thonotosassa, Florida, under the name Marshall Missionary Baptist Church the first service was held in the home of Dea. Walker and Sis. Maggie Hall. Nine persons were present for the March 1963 service:

The message was delivered by Rev. Morris and four members were added to the new church. In a meeting following the service, Rev. A. C. Campbell was elected pastor and served in that capacity until his death in October 1963. Groundbreaking for a new building had previously been held on January 27, 1963. Meanwhile, services continued in a nearby vacant building on Fowler Avenue owned by Sis. Emogene Washington. Because the church was without a pastor, in December 1963, Rev. I. Anderson, moderator of Mt. Pilgrim Association, held election of officers. Those elected were:

On February 17, 1980, groundbreaking service for the new sanctuary Walker Road was held and construction began. The completed sanctuary was dedicated on January20, 1985 and the cornerstone was laid April 14, 1985

Over the years, Pastors Johnson and First Lady Johnson proved that they were people willing to work for God. They initiated and motivated the congregation’s involvement in association, church civic, and community activities throughout the city. The church ministries were strengthened and continue to carry out the Great Commission.

As we continue to grow in number we saw a need to purchase a van. Through donations and fund raising the church was able to purchase a fifteen (15) passenger van in 1995.

On Sunday, February 5, 1995 First Lady Helen C. Johnson was called to service in heaven and the congregation as well as the city mourned this great loss. Her legacy continues in many ministry of the church n the Helen C. Johnson scholarship.

The church burned the mortgage in the Spring of 1997, it was completely debt free.

Pastor Johnson continues to deliver God’s message and work toward the kingdom-building goal. As a devoted, caring, and compassionate leader, Pastor Johnson calls for congregation, and Christians everywhere, to press toward the mark of the high calling which is in Christ Jesus; until he answered his final call. Pastor Ben Johnson, Jr., served as our pastor for thirty (35) years until his demise on July 30, 2005.
